What we can do to address littering

Many residents have been in touch with me about littering, which is something I'm very keen to address.

Whether it be the discarded afters of a takeaway, dog poo "decorations" on trees in green spaces or just general rubbish strewn across the pavement or verge, littering is not nice and has a negative impact on our community. I have been working to address it in both Westway and in Horley.

While out dog walking, some residents haven't been cleaning up after their furry friends correctly after they've done their business on Kenley Aerodrome. We've seen poo bags being hung on trees. This is a real concern and I've raised this with the City of London Corporation, who own the land on Kenley Aerodrome, and asked them to install a new dog bin. Work is continuing to happen behind the scenes but there are positive signs that a new bin could be on the way.

Alongside this, I am also working to get bins installed elsewhere at Hambledon Linear Park and Oakgrove among other places to further address littering.

My friend Cllr Hannah Avery has been pushing Reigate and Banstead Borough Council for more litter bins in Horley with residents feeding back sites for new bins, which the council are investigating the possibility of installing them. I personally am very keen to see new bins installed at Horley's bus stops to address littering there.

Surrey Heath Borough Council have recently announced they will be adding QR codes to their bins which can be used to report overflowing to the council if scanned. This is a brilliant idea and something I would welcome in Horley and in Westway.

I am also working on a project in the near future to further address littering in the community, so watch this space.

In the meantime, please use these links to report any issues with bins to the council:
