Mole Valley District Council's perilous finances

Writer: Taylor O'DriscollTaylor O'Driscoll

A bombshell report published by Mole Valley District Council officers suggested the council was on the brink of bankruptcy.

"The Council would be at risk of being unable to set a balanced budget for 2027/28 if no savings were made." Those were the words of the report. I've seen how Croydon Council's bankruptcy has affected the local community and I am deeply concerned about the impact council bankruptcy will have in Mole Valley.

If the council goes bankrupt, all new spending must stop and services including playgrounds, planning enforcement, leisure centres and grants to community groups will be at risk of being stopped. This is because the council would be barred from spending money on certain services.

All of this has been caused by irresponsible spending on a variety of vanity projects which have aimed only to boost the profile of senior Councillors with ambitions for higher office.

I am calling on the Liberal Democrats running the council to get a grip on the finances and build strong financial governance. Mole Valley residents deserve better than this.
