CANCELLED: West Street pedestrianisation

Writer: Taylor O'DriscollTaylor O'Driscoll

After campaigning from Marisa Heath, Michelle Watson, myself and local people, I am pleased that the West Street pedestrianisation has been cancelled.

It is disappointing however that the administration's energy has been directed at this proposal rather than what actually matters to residents and local businesses.

Mole Valley needs Dorking to thrive and 25 years of Liberal Democrat District Councillors in Dorking and 6 years of a Liberal Democrat council in Mole Valley has seen Dorking and the wider district go backwards. Social housing is in crisis, residents don't feel safe walking on their own local streets, playgrounds need investing in, Dorking high street is in need of support and now Mole Valley District Council is within two years of going bankrupt.

Instead of focusing on vanity projects which boost the profile of their senior Councillors like pedestrianising West Street would have been, I suggest the Liberal Democrats running the District Council get a grip on these issues like a responsible council would.
