Today was Pride in Surrey. And this year it was being hosted locally in Reigate. Of course, I had to go along with friends.
There was a number of poignant messages throughout the day but one of the highlights for me was seeing Cllr Richard Biggs, the Leader of Reigate and Banstead Borough Council wearing a Pride rainbow suit jacket and a Progress Pride bow tie. I speak as someone who is pansexual and not represented by the conventional rainbow flag, this was really nice to see.
It was lovely to see so much support, love and positivity from residents to members of the LGBTQ+ community. I was honoured to have been to take part in the parade myself alongside a cross-party group of Horley Town Councillors. We departed from Reigate Town Hall and walked down Reigate High Street past lots of supportive residents and then arrived at Priory Park.
When the parade reached Priory Park, we were greeted by a fun fair and lots of stalls from local businesses. I even managed to say hello to Pebble the Penguin, who was there to promote Surrey Libraries.
It was lovely to catch up with friends including Cllr Jed Dwight, Cllr Samantha Marshall and Cllr Rich Michalowski as well. Overall, it was a wonderful day and fantastic to see Pride in Surrey have its main event in the east of the county this year.
